My research has undercovered some interesting information about the ancient roots of the Bugeja name. It dates back to the Frank kingdom during the time of the Romans, with family roots traced to the area of Limousin.
Bugeja is a variation of the French Bugeau with several other variants, including Bugeaux, Bujeau, and Bugead, among others.
The name flourished under Eleanor of Aquitaine who granted that area of France to King Henry II. It was later reunited with the royal kingdom of France.
Members of the Bugeja clan may have migrated to Malta as early as Roman times; in the 16th century, there was another migration out of France through Europe and even to North America.
Many Bugejas distinguished themselves in the arts, religion, politics and culture, according to the Marquis databank (Swyrich Corporation).
In the past it had been difficult to get data on the Bugeja name from English databanks. I did this research in a French databank in Nova Scotia while on Holiday there this summer.
