The name Calamatta is most probably of Greek origin (even the Italian
surname, there is a L. Calamatta school in Rome) deriving from the name
of the city of Kalamata in the SW of Peloponnese, which is
geographically very near to Malta. When I had look at the Greek phone
book, I found that most of the Greek names Kalamatas come from Central
Greece (esp. Thessaly).
