Probably it is a Spanish surname and the
surname arrived in Malta in the Middle Ages probably when Antonio Cardona, a
man which bought the island from King Alfonso of Sicily.

The Cardona family originated in Cardona, Spain. We were warriors for the king, Cardona. The village still exists and it's just a few miles away from Barcelona.
