Gatt info in Italian
Submitted by COUNT CHARLES DE BRANCHEFORTE SAID
The Historical Research Centre provides us with the following
information:
"...It is indeed not surprising that one of the first Western
European countries, after the fall of the Roman Empire, to
institute a hereditary surname, was Italy. There is documentary
evidence to show that hereditary names were employed among
the patricians of the Republic of Venice in the tenth and eleventh
century. As among the Romans, where a gens-name, derived
from the founder of the family tree was added to the praenomen,
or first name, so too among the Venetians the "cognomen",
a "family name", was derived from a name applied to an early
ancestor. This name was itself derived from a number of very
diverse sources.
The Italian surname Gatto is of nickname origin. Nickname
surnames are those names which derive from a physical
characteristic or personal attribute of the initial bearer. In this
instance the surname Gatto/Gatt derives from the nickname of
the same spelling given to a person whose manners resembled
those of a felino (feline), in this case a "gatto", which in english
means "cat". The surname "Gatto" may also be a Germanic
proper name. The word itself could derive from the dialectical
form "catta" or "catterina" or even from "agata" or "cato".
Variants of the surname "Gatto" include Gatt, Lo Gatto, Gattini,
Gattone, Gattullo, Gattarelli and Gattinelli.
The earliest reference to the surname Gatto/Gatt is a record of
Baron Djar il-Bniet, named Cicco (short for Francesco) Gatto.
This title of Baron is the oldest title extant in Malta, and it was
granted to the above in the town of Messina by Ludovic of
Aragon, King of Sicily and Malta in 1350. Cicco Gatto was the first
person to hold this title, which he received after he crushed an
uprising in Gozo (Malta's sister island) against the House of
Aragon. The following coat-of-arms were granted to the Gatto
de Piemonte family.
Coat of Arms: Or; a band wavy azure, charged with a cat
argent, spotted sable.
Crest: The cat of the arms issuing.
Origin: Italy
The Historical Research Centre.
The arrival of Cicco Gatto in Malta belongs to a very important
chapter in the annals of Maltese history, which is very well
documented and accounted for by many contemporary
historians, (such as Profs. Andrew Vella/L-Istorja ta' Malta), all
of whom agree to the fact that the Gatt family was truly the first
ever noble family with a hereditary title on the Maltese islands.
This also marked the passage of the Maltese territories form
the House of Aragon to a succession of noble families, better
known as Feudal Lords. It is also understood that due to the
connection with Cicco Gatto, the Gatt surname owes its origin to
the Italian version rather than the Germanic one, as indicated
by The Historical Research Centre.
