The information I have is that the Gili's hailed from Spain. To be precise, from the Barcelona region or Catalunya.
This theory makes sense to me and on one of my trips to Barcelona I did look up the telephone directory and found that "Gili" is still a very common family name.
Another theory which I have reflected on is that really the Gili's and the Hili's in Malta are one and the same. As the name Gili in Spanish is pronounced Hili, my hunch is that on registering children in church baptisms one family pronounced their name as Hili but insisted on the priest to write it Gili whereas another relation pronounced the name Hili and the priest wrote down what he heard and it was not corrected.
These are my personal theories. They make some sense but I never actually did any serious research.
