The surname Gonzaga is of patronymic origin, being derived from the first name of the father or mother of its original bearer. It is in fact, a variant of Gonzales, which derives in turn from the popular first-name Gonzalo. "Gonzalo" which was found throughout medieval Italy and the Ibernian peninsula, is probably derived from the Germanic personal name "Gunz-hardt".
Gonzaga is the name too of one of the most illusrious of the principle families of Italy, the Gonzagas of Mantovano. Of German origin, they ruled this region (Mantua) from 1328 until 1703, and branches established themselves throughout the rest of the country, holding important positions in both church and the State. Federico Gonzaga (1500-1540), for instance, was made Duke of Mantua by the Emperor Charles V, and his brother Ercole was Cardinal of the Church, while Vincenzo (1587-1612) is remembered as a friend of Tasso the Poet.
