While Griffin can also be an British surname, in Ireland the there are two Griffin clans that are both Irish Celtic(Gaelic) in origin. The Irish were one of the first peoples in Europe to begin using surnames over 1,000 years ago. So they were using the Griffin surname a few hundred years before the English.
The surname was derived from the legendary monster, the Gryphon(Griffin). It was origionally used as a nickname to describe somebody who was fierce or dangerous. In the Irish language Griffin is Ó Gríobhtha. There were two Griffin clans, one in county Kerry and one in county Clare just outside the town of Ennis.
