The name was already present in Argentina in the 1300s, it only started out in Malta in 1565 during the great siege.
The basic story is that one of the Maltese soldiers started scaling one of Vittoriosa's fortified walls, using just his hands.
One of the men in command of his unit said that he was scaling the wall 'proprio come un grillo' (Grillo in Italian , which was the language used those days, meaning cricket)
The coat of arms as depicted by this first grillo survuves too, unlike any that you have posted.
it takes the form of a white background crest on which can be seen a red helmet as worn inthose days , with a green cricket (not grasshopper) on top of the helmet.
