The Surname Magrin has been on the island since the times of the Great Seige of Malta. Proof of this is the name of Jehan De Cornelian Magrin is found firstly at the courtyard of St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta and on the facade of the Senglea Church.
So the probability is that it arrived in Malta with the Knights of St. John. It is of French origin, so much that there is a village in the South of France which is called Magrin. This village was named after a Roman Centurion who was called Magrinus.
The village is situated between Pratviel and Bertre along the D12, or better still between Lavaur and Puylaurends on the D12, entering from Toulouse and Castres.
In the village there is the famous Chateau de Magrin with it's Musee' Du Pastel.
The Magrin coat of arms is a limestone background with three blue windows.

I came across some interesting information regarding the "Magrins" while reading "Maltese In Spain During The Napoleonic Age", written by Dr Giovanni Bonello LL.D.
This book was reprinted from the PSM magazine Vol. 19 No. 3 December 1990.
According to Dr Bonello, on March 20th 1796, in an Italiann city called Leghorn, Giuseppe Taboni issued a Bill of Exchange on Guiseppe Cammilleri in Favour of Salvatore MAGRIN (Doc. 3). According to this book, the MAGRINS were Maltese traders based in the Spanish possession of the Canary Island.
Salvatore Magrin appears again in 1797 on a Bill of Lading issued in the Canaries. This refers to the carraige to Cadice O Aliasira (Algeciras) of a large consignement of beans, barrels of Reyo and Mantera, candels and almonds. The goods were addressed to Raimundo Farugia maltese (Doc. 5)
In this book, there is a copy of a letter from Nicola Svilocosi in Caleci? to Guiseppe Magrin negoziante Maltese in S. Cruz, Teneriffe, dated 25th November, 1796 (Doc.4)
Besides the name MAGRIN, there are various other Maltese surnames who were active in Spain and mentioned in various documents.
According to Dr Bonello, now a Judge of the European Courts, all this information is the pioneer work carried out by Mr Antonio Farrugia and Mr Carmelo Vassallo on the 18th century Maltese colonies in Spain.
I think it will be very interesting to read the minutes of the conference which was held at the Aula Magna of the Valletta University in May 1990. This Colloquy was about the various aspects of Spanish-Maltese History.
