According to information found in the Liber Matrimoniarum 1 Fol. 22v held at the Naxxar Parish Archives the surname Pirotta first appeared in Naxxar when a certain Julius Pirotta (a foreigner) married Katarina daughter of Michael both residing at Naxxar. The marriage took place on the 31st August 1576.
With reference to the statement shown in the History of Pirotta,further research was carried out. It was established that:
a. The keeping of records of Births, Marriages and Deaths at the Mdina Cathedral started in the year 1539;
b. Those at Gudia Parish Office started in the year 1555;
c. Those at Birgu Parish Office started in the year 1558 and
d. Those at Zejtun Parish Office started in the year 1580.
From the initial period of these records up to the date of marriage of Julius Pirotta in 1576, nowhere could the surname Pirotta be found.
The Militia List of 1419/20 does not mention any such surname.
It can, therefore, be safely assumed that the surname PIROTTA did appear for the first time in the village of Naxxar.
It has also been established that the maiden surname of Margarita was CANCIUN - a surname which has faded out after 1665.
Many thanks go to Mr. Paul Catania, Father Alexander Bonnici, O.F.M. Conv., Mons. Alfred Xuereb of Mdina Cathedral, Rev. Joe Caruana, Archpriest of Birgu, and Dr. Horatio Vella for their help.
