The Tagliaferro family were originally from Genoa, Italy. They were very successful traders throughout the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Biago Tagliaferro established a base in Malta and built up a large fleet of ships trading mostly in grain from the black sea ports.
The Family of TAGLIAFERRO, Bankers were created the papal title of Count in the 19th century.
Presently held by the Sant-Fournier, direct descendants.

- Alfredo Tagliaferro - (1853-1913), 2nd Count Tagliaferro.
- Girolamo Tagliaferro - was created Count in 1892 by Pope Leo XIII to his descendants in the male primogenial line born in lawful wedlock and not seperated from the Catholic religion.
Girolamo was also a Banker, financier, merchant and philanthropist.
