The surname Ward arose indepently in both Ireland and England. In England in arose because of that persons occupation, just like the surname Cooper or Smith. Ward is derived from the old English weard which means guard.
Ward in Ireland is the anglicisation of the Celtic Irish surname, Mac an Bhaird. When "Mac an Bhaird" is translated into English it means son of the poet. There were two different Ward clans in Ireland. Both clans were professional poets and were treated with great respect by all the Gaelic(Irish Celtic) clans. One clan lived under the patronage of the mighty O'Donnel clan of county Donegal while the other Wards lived under the patronage of the O'Kelly or as they are more commonly known, the Kelly clan in county Galway.
To this day, the Ward surname in Ireland is most numberous in counties Galway and Donegal.
